Meghalaya

What is there is Meghalaya?

Meghalaya, meaning Abode of Clouds, is one of the seven sisters of India. True to its name, Meghalaya is the wettest state in India and Mawsynram (in Cherrapunji district in Meghalaya) is said to be wettest place on earth.

IMG_20150928_165559

Meghalaya consist of three major ranges namely Garo, Khasi & Jaintia and these ranges derive their names from the tribes that live in these ranges. Meghalaya, unlike other states of India is Matrilineal society (not Matriarchal as thought by many) i.e after marriage husband takes wife’s surname, also property is inherited by the female of the family but the major decisions in society and family are taken by the male population and not by female (as lot of people gets confused in this). A lot of books, documentaries are made both by Indians and foreigners about the unique culture of Meghalaya. I would suggest to visit the place and talk to locals, because these books and documentaries can be very misleading.

IMG_20150927_153000420_HDR

Apart from being famous for its culture, this state has highest plunge fallsof India i.e.Nokhalikai , living root bridge, cleanest village in Asia, caves, adventure sports and obviously beautiful landscapes.

IMG_20150927_102317643

If you are planning to go for a relaxing trip then you might want to skip Meghalaya, not saying that you can’t relax in Meghalaya but because this place has so much to offer, just a lazy weekend won’t do justice to this place.

IMG_20150926_112447

When to visit Meghalaya?

As Meghalaya receives high amount of rainfall, it is not advisable to travel to this state during monsoon( July to September). November to February are good months to travel (milky way is also clearly visible during these months); September end and October are also fine, but can get very hot and humid. March to June will be hot and the falls might not have a good throughput, so its best to avoid these months.

IMG_20150929_080741

We visited Meghalaya in September end, luckily it was not raining then, so we were able to travel easily but then the day were very hot and humid but nights were pleasant

IMG_20150926_162053_AO_HDR

If you are traveling immediately after rains, you might not be able to visit the caves and also there is high possibility of encountering leeches.

How to plan a trip to Meghalaya?

I would suggest to have at least a week in hand in order to get the feel of the place. There are three ways to travel this place:

  1. Landscape viewing: If you are traveling to see the landscapes and visit only very famous places of Meghalaya, and if you have less days in hand, then do hire a cab right away from Shillong. Get your hotels pre-booked. This way is also best for people traveling with children.
  2. (Culture + Landscapes) viewing : If you want to get a feel of true Meghalaya but have a week to ten days in hand, then better do a pseudo backpacking kind of trip but with few reservations made before hand. We traveled this way.
  3. Much More : If you have lot of time in hand and want to explore the real Meghalaya, then definitely do backpacking. Do stay at couple of villages and also near double decker bridge then you will get real feel of what Meghalaya is all about.

IMG_20150928_110333

We are not big backpacking fans, we try to mix comfort + backpacking. For this trip we traveled with one backpack, this made it easier to travel. Also, we had done some research before hand, so had narrowed down to the places where we wanted to visit, but didn’t make any reservations.

Do write to us to know in detail how Meghalaya can be planned and how we planned our trip.

Where to stay in Meghalaya (Khasi)?

We traveled to Khasi part of Meghalaya, hence will be able to give inputs about that region.

First of all, apart from Shillong, don’t expect too much of luxury. Hotels in Meghalaya are expensive.  For the money you pay, services and comfort would not be the same. There are few good hotels and resorts but they are bit pricey.

IMG_20150926_094037

Sai-mika resort ( very close to Nokhilakai Falls and caves) was the one in where we stayed in Sohra/ Cherrapunji . A very beautiful resort. A bit expensive but then amazing property. Cherrapunji Holiday resorts also has many good resorts in Meghalaya. Pre-book these resorts if you are traveling during peak season.

IMG_20151002_060850

In Mawphlang ( near to Shillong ) there is Maple Pine farm, which is a must visit. Its something similar to bread and breakfast but in a farm with totally different experience. Highly recommend this (but do check their website before going, as they are not like normal B&B). There are few beautiful treks near this farm, hence you can easily spend a day or two here. Check their website for more details:http://www.culturalpursuits.com/general/maple-pine-farms

We also stayed near Living Root Bridge in Serene Homestay. This is suitable only for people who are backpacking.

IMG_20150929_065536

In Mawlynnong, cleanest village in Asia, there are many homestays. But people here charge exorbitant amount of money even for a small room. So be ready to shell our 2k/night for a very small room.

IMG_20150930_175323

In Shillong, Travelers Nest (Later recommended by our friend), Ashutosh Inn ( we stayed here) are decent  places to stay.

What places can be visited in Meghalaya?

As we visited only Khasi part of Meghalaya, I will be listing only those places.

  1. Nokhalikai Falls : Highest plunge water fall of India. It is very close to Sai-mika resort in Sohra. There are around 300 staircase near these falls, where one can get a good view of the falls. Also, do read on how these waterfalls got it’s name(it’s both interesting and weird story).IMG_20150926_105955
  2. Masmai caves: The most famous and commercialized  cave of Meghalaya. These are small caves and very crowded but easily accessible and open to everyone.IMG_20150927_141238
  3. Arwah cave : This cave is very big and not visited by many, mainly because its very big and dark cave. Not suitable for kids and elderly people. But highly recommended for people who like exploring caves. They are near to Nokhalikai falls. Falls and caves can be covered in a single day.(Don’t forget to take your trekking shoes when visiting this place, it is not cake walk).IMG_20150927_153452177_HDR
  4. Living root bridge: First of all there are many living root bridges in Meghalaya. One of the most famous one is Double decker bridge at Sohra. It is around 1 hr away by car from Nokhalikai falls. This place is heaven for backpackers, as there are many routes and blue pools to explore near the bridge. If you don’t mind staying in a small homestay, then this is a place to be.  A very important thing about this bridge is that, to reach here, you will have to take around 3000 staircases and some wired suspension bridges. If you are not planning to stay here, then start in the morning so that you have enough time to climb back.IMG_20150928_162017
  5. Mawlynnong : Cleanest village of Asia. This village is very clean but then you won’t miss on anything if you don’t visit this village. Though the drive to this place is worth it, but the village is not. There are many homestays in this village, but unlike other homestays, these ones are very expensive (1.5k to 2k per night). People here try to make extra bucks by saying that you can see Bangladesh. The only difference we felt was that GPS and time were  getting updated to that of Bangladesh but honestly you cant make out any difference so the whole idea of seeing Bangladesh is not worth it. Also, we talked to locals and according to them most villages in Meghalaya are clean and it’s just that Government has done few things for this village that’s why this particular village has got this fame.
  6. Dawki : Is a small Indian village that borders with Bangladesh. This place is a must visit as it has crystal clear river water, in which hundreds of fisherman come every morning to fish. An amazing site to witness. 2 hrs is more than enough for this place. It is about 45 mins drive from Mawlynnong village.IMG_20151001_090429IMG_20151001_074821
  7. Barapani or Umiam Lake : On the way from Gauhati to Shillong, you will pass this magnificent lake. Usually people just stop for a while, but you can also get a hotel booked near this lake. Worth stopping.IMG_20150925_141111480
  8. Nartiang Monoliths : An interesting place with lot of monoliths. But do read about the the significance of monoliths in Meghalayan culture.(We were not able to visit this place but was recommended by lot of people)
  9. Sacred Forest: In Mawphlang, this sacred forest is a must visit. With variety of different plant species, this place is considered sacred. Also, it is said that you should not take anything back from the forest otherwise bad luck will follow you.  IMG_20150928_125313
  10. Dain-Thlen Falls : Very close to Saimika resort. These falls can definitely be skipped. There are so many falls in Meghalaya that visiting all is not possible.
  11. Nohsngithiang Falls : In Cherra district,  after Arwah caves , these falls come on the way to Mawsmai caves. Very beautiful falls. Must visit.

What is must carry for Meghalaya trip?

If you are planning to travel during September and October, then make sure you have sunscreen, summer cap, windcheater, salt (for leeches), a light jacket, good walking/running shoes. Over recent years, rainfall has decreased in Meghalaya, hence September does not receive as much rainfall as earlier it used to. Try to travel light.

IMG_20150928_112209

Post October to January, Meghalaya is cold. Summer months are pretty hot.

How to travel to/within Meghalaya ?

Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital has direct flight from Kolkata and Guwahati. Another way to reach Shillong is via Guwahati (Assam). Gauhati is well connected to major cities in India by air, railway and road. From Guwahati, Shillong is about 2.5 hrs and can easily be traveled by buses, rail, taxis or rented bike. From Gauhati airport, one can get shared taxis (400 Rs) for Shillong.

IMG_20150926_120426_HDR

From Shillong, Sohra (Cherrapunji) is about 2.5 hrs and can be reached by shared taxis, private taxi, rented bike or bus.  Shared taxi are also available for travel between villages. If you don’t have spare days in hand then better try a private taxi or rented bike.

IMG_20150926_151728_AO_HDR

We took some shared cabs during starting days of our trip, but later we rented a bike from Shillong. If you are planning to rent a bike do contact Ashley of Cacti 360 Group (greenrouteshg@gmail.com, Ph: 08119007851) before hand as this guy might also help you to get homestays in Meghalaya. Also, if you want to do some adventure sports, he is the right person to approach.

Also, from Sai-mika resort, you can get rental cycles. I think it is a great way to explore nearby places.

IMG_20151001_135338

Some tips for Meghalaya Trip.

  1. Try to travel light to this place if you don’t have your own car or private taxi. Local transport in Meghalaya is good but it will consume lot of time as shared taxis wait for all the people to fill in.
  2. Do carry some packed food.
  3. Post August, it gets dark after 5pm or 5:30pm, so its better to start your day early.
  4. Pack all that you will need, apart from Shillong, its difficult to find shops.
  5. Do try adventure sports in Meghalaya such as zip lining ( Sohra) , tree climbing /rappeling (Near Mawphlang).
  6. Hire a bike and travel Meghalaya on two wheels. Super fun.

Our Experience of Meghalaya.

We had planned for a 3 day trip to Meghalaya but later we decided to stay here as it had so much to offer. The thing that we loved about this state is its unique culture. This place has so many stories related to their unique rituals. From ladies Jainsem dress to betel eating habit of people to sacred forest rituals, everything in Meghalaya is interesting.

IMG_20151002_165115

On one hand, one can learn about rich culture of Meghalaya on the other hand one can enjoy the western culture too. Meghalaya has a great western influence, hence everyone ( almost everyone) in Meghalaya plays guitar and not amateur guitar but people here have amazing bands of their own. Also, people do lot of adventure sports, biker group events and so much more.

Few things or places which I will never forget : Sitting near blue pools and listening to waterfall near double decker root bridge, looking at fisherman fishing in Dawki and Bangladesh, listening to band playing in Sai-mika resort, having amazing French toast breakfasts, looking at valley filled with clouds.

What is there in Gangtok/ Sikkim?

DSC02856

DSC02780
Best place to have b’fast…Don’t you agree..??

Gangtok , at an elevation of 5,410 ft is  one of the most beautiful cities in India and is the capital of Sikkim. India’s highest peak Khangchendzonga of a height of 28,169ft (3rd highest in the world) is here and there is an amazing trek in Khangchendzonga National Park, which starts from Yuksom , 125km away from Gangtok. Gangtok is the base point of many beautiful places in Sikkim such as Nathula Pass, Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen, Lachung, Yumthang and many more. It has both the natural beauty and city appeal to it. MG road which is always full of people, has clubs, restaurants (it has some very beautiful cafes) and shopping stores. Sikkim has so much to offer, if you are interested in trekking or paragliding , or you just want to sit and relax or you want to visit second highest lake in India , this is the place to be. It is the place for solo travelers, family vacations, honeymooners, or a trip with friends.

DSC02803
The place for walking…I have not seen that in cities like Delhi..Gangtok seems to be way ahead

We noticed two amazing things in Gangtok ,one, they have a small walking trail which is fenced on both sides, hence very safe for children to walk around the city (mountains) and two, they actually have a very operable government tourism centre on MG road. If you are going then do check this place to know more about trekking trips.

Gangtok’s temperature varies from 22 degree C in summers to 4 degree C in winters. It does not get any snowfall but it does rain a lot there. We had visited Gangtok in April, and it was very pleasant. Summer(May-June) is the peak season hence prices are high and during monsoon(July –September) it rains a lot , so it is bit risky to travel in this season. The best times to visit Gangtok is October to December. During this time you can visit nearby places, but in Jan and Feb (depending on the snowfall), some routes might remain close. So if you are planning to travel then make a few calls to the hotels or information centres and then only book for vacation. Route to Gurudongmar closes in Jan and opens in March/ April depending on that year.

Where to stay in Gangtok?

DSC02790

Gangtok has many hotels, lodges and inns. So you can have a luxurious stay at Welcome Heritage Denzong Residency or a budget stay in Shilton Lodge. Check booking.com to book your stay.

How to reach Gangtok?

DSC02958
One of the Seven waterfalls near Gangtok
  • By Train : The nearest railway station to Gangtok is about 148 kilometres away at New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. From here you can take a private cab (they charge around 2k) or you can take shared cab (200 Rs pp).
  • By Air : The airport nearest to Gangtok is about 124 kilometres away in Bagdogra, West Bengal. You have to take a taxi to reach the city.

What to visit near or in Gangtok?

You can’t cover all the places near to Gangtok in a short trip. So depending on the time you have in hand, you can plan which places you would like to visit. Below are few such places:

  1. Gurudongmar : Second highest lake of India. Only Indians are allowed here, foreigners are only allowed till Chopta valley.  Lachen is the nearest place where nigh stay is possible. If going via Gangtok then night stay is necessary at Lachen, leave for this early morning.

  5. Nathula Pass : A  mountain pass that connects India to China. A beautiful destination. It’s a day trip. It requires permit so get the work done a day before (Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays are only visit able days)

There are many such beautiful places near Gangtok which are must visits.

What was our experience at Gangtok?

The best thing about Gangtok is the people of Gangtok. They are all well dressed and very good in etiquette . We never felt that we are being cheated and most of the people were polite. We had really awesome experience at Gangtok. The journey to Sikkim was quite tiresome as we took the train and then shared taxi, There was too much dust on the way as there was construction of road going on but other than that It was good and we enjoyed our stay.

The food of sikkm was also very great, we tried once and we fell in love with it. If you are going there then do try their traditional food it is nice and different.

Also, a short trip wont do justice to Sikkim, we had gone to Sikkim for 9days and we still haven’t seen 10% of it. But we had prioritized the places we wanted to visit, hence we choose Gurudongmar (Cholamu is the highest lake of India, 1km ahead of Gurudongmar but civilians are not allowed to visit it).

Yumthang Valley/ Zero Point

Yumthang Valley and Zero Point

DSC03045

What is there is Yumthang Valley and Zero Point?

DSC03307

Serenity. Yumthang Valley is beautiful all year round. At a height of 11800ft, Yumthang is very cold in summers too. It is a kind of wind tunnel. A tributary of Teesta flows in the valley, making this place a spectacular place. It is a must visit when travelling to Sikkim.

DSC03330

Zero point is highest place near Yumthang valley and it is covered with ice throughout the year. The grandeur of snow capped mountains makes the place surreal.

DSC03297

DSC03335

How to reach Yumthang Valley and Zero Point?

You need to book a cab from Gangtok to reach to Yumthang Valley. Please refer to Gurudongmar post of more details. You need to make a night stop at Lachung (a small town: Lachen and Lachung are small towns with basic amenities, sometimes when roads are blocked the whole town is deprived of food) and then travel to Yumthang Valley the next day. There are not many options to travel to this place, either private or shared taxi (rains make the mountains a source of waterfall, its beautiful to see numerous waterfalls but these have their negative impacts too).

DSC03052

Zero point is about an hour drive from Yumthang. There is not a single place on this route where you would not feel to click pics. Make sure you talk to your cab driver before hand to include this place, as they might not include it in the itinerary and will charge extra for it.

DSC03111

Where to stay in Yumthang Valley?

IMAG0813

There is no place to stay in Yumthang Valley or at Zero Point. As you will be taking the cab service, they will book a hotel/ motel for you in Lachung. Its a town you will fall in love with.

DSC03283

How much time you can spend at Yumthang Valley and Zero Point?

Very frankly not much. The reason being there is no place to stay in Yumthang or at Zero Point, therefore you need to go back to Lachung for the night and at 11000ft it gets dark very early and it can rain alomost anytime, and can lead to blocking of roads. Hence your cab driver/ tour guide would be the best person to tell you how much time to spend as he would well aware of such sudden changes.

IMAG0861

What to carry to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point?

Its very windy out there and very chilly too. So make sure you carry a good woollen cap to cover your ears though you can buy from Yumthang too.

IMAG0818

You can get the gum boots for Zero point from Yumthang at very nominal rates.

DSC03295

The place does have some small Dhabas at which you can get maggie and tea. Though you can carry some packed food. Don’t worry about drinking water, Teesta’s tributary’s water is very clean and you can drink from it directly.

IMAG0875

What more is there in Yumthang Valley?

DSC03325

Nearby to the Valley there is a hot water spring. This whole region has many hot water springs but then only one is made a commercial. Its a respite from the cold weather. Local people say that you can boil your eggs in those hot springs, we wish we could have tried.

DSC03343

There are couple of treks moderate to hard treks from Zero point, but these are treks require guidance as China border is very nearby and one does not want to wander off into their territory. Moreover, guides are well aware about the place and these gigantic mountains are not so forgiving.

DSC03310

Zero point is really awesome for skiing. All the skiing related equipments can be rented from Yumthang valley.

DSC03302

Chopta Valley is on the way, it is again very beautiful but we could hardly stay there for 5mins as it was super windy.

IMAG0748

Our experience of Yumthang Valley and Zero point.

DSC03345

Zero point was really amazing. We walked around a bit and found that at some places ice was not well formed so our feet used to sink in it and there have been fatality because of this, but the fear was overcome by the beauty of the vast snowy landscape.

DSC03314

We wished to spend more time at all the places, but we realized that playing in snow could get very tiring and chilly winds could cause severe headaches.

The board at the Lake

Gurudongmar lake is second highest lake of India (15th or 16th highest of the world), with the height of about 17,000 ft (5210 m) above sea level. The highest lake of India, Cholamu, is around a kilometre away from Gurudongmar but its not open to civilians at it lies near China border ( both are in Sikkim). Hence Gurudongmar is highest visit-able lake of India. Its impossible to explain how beautiful the lake is.

When to visit Gurudongmar Lake?

Enroute to India's heighest lake

Around April start ( depends on the winter ) the route to the lake gets open and it remains open till late October (again depends on the winter that year). So do check before hand.

Once you reach Gangtok, book a cab for Gurudongmar lake a day in advance. There are many travel agents, most reliable is Sikkim Tourism house which is on the Gangtok MG road. Don’t think of driving as the terrain is very rough and requires a lot of skill to drive on those roads.

Any health issues we should be concerned with?

DSC03159

The lake is at a very good height so expect the air to be thin so it gets difficult to breath. Since you will be in a vehicle and not walking much, so there should not be any problem. We had headache when we reached the lake. One of the family came with a kid, so there should not be any issue while travelling with kids.

Note: carry lot of water and keep sipping on it to nullify the altitude health issues.

What does the Gurudongmar package include?

DSC03234
One just cannot put price on such thing – the ice, the river and the desert all at once
DSC03237
The grandeur of nature makes you realize how insignificant you are

The whole trip is usually for 3 days and costs about 14000 Rs ( you can customize it according to your needs), which includes travelling cost , breakfast, lunch, dinner, accommodation.

Accommodation is usually a mediocre hotel ( don’t expect anything in decor). Night stays will be in two small villages: Lachen and Lachung and nothing much is present there except natural beauty.

What Itinerary should be followed for Gurudongmar lake?

DSC03208
Itinerary is hardest part you say – try taking a bath in the lake at 0 degree temp

If you have booked a cab then you don’t need to worry about anything but then you can customize a few places in the itinerary.

The travel route is Gangtok – Lachen – Gurudongmar lake – Lachung – Yumthang Valley – Zero Point – Chopta Valley – Gangtok.

  • Leave Gangtok around 9 am.
  • Reach Lachen (110 km from Gangtok), takes almost 6 hrs as you will make many pit stops on the way.
  • Stay overnight in Lachen.
  • Leave at 3 am for Gurudongmar Lake.
  • Reach Gurudongmar Lake around 8 am ( takes 4 hrs from Lachen)
  • Spend an hour or two at the Lake ( you wont be able to stay there for long roads to the lake are very bad and in Mountains at 17000 ft it might rain anytime, making it impossible to travel.
  • Go back to Lachen, have lunch and leave for Lachung ( it takes around 2-3 hrs depending on the weather)
  • Stay overnight in Lachung.
  • Leave for Yumthang Valley ( hour or two drive). Stay there for hour or two.
  • Leave for Zero point. Spend sometime ( depending on your stamina) in snow.
  • Leave for Chopta valley( stayed there for 5mins, because of the wind). Stay there for sometime.
  • Leave for Gangtok. Reach around 8 pm.

What is must for Gurudongmar Lake?

We are confused whether the road to destination was better or the destination itself
We are confused whether the road to destination was better or the destination itself
  • You need to provide identity documents ( passport, driving licence) to the travel agent a day before the trip as its a must
  • Take warm clothes (hooded jackets or cap and woollen wear)
  • Take some packed food (though the agents usually provide breakfast, lunch and dinner but then you will require something to munch on) as you will not find shops on the way
  • A good camera

PS: Pan cards are not considered as valid Identification proof in Sikkim

What was our experience of Gurudongmar Lake?

Because of the weather we weren’t able to stay at the lake for long but then its worth the travel and money to stay there for even an hour. Its a magnificent place. If you are planning a trip to Sikkim then make sure you keep minimum 3 days for this whole experience.
